During the summers of 2000 and 2001, I have been working for a couple of weeks each summer in Eastern Europe with the programs of the Independent Journalism Foundation and its Centers for Independent Journalism. I have given lectures about the press and the Internet, and run new media workshops in Prague, Budapest and Brastislava. The foundation's mission: "Helping the people of Eastern Europe make informed decisions by supporting a free and independent press."

It's been a wonderful experience for me and I have learned a lot teaching some of the most enthusiastic and enterprising journalists I have ever met. I also got to work with several Roma, or gypsy, journalists in Budapest (the centers are helping train the first generation of professional Roma journalists in Central Europe).
